Details of Attack on Convoy in Iraq

The U.S. military's account of
Saturday's attack on a U.S.-led
coalition convoy south of Baghdad
that killed four American soldiers
and an Iraqi soldier,
and left three American servicemen
missing and believed abducted by
militants linked to al-Qaida:
-U.S.-led forces patrol west of Mahmoudiya,
20 miles south of Baghdad, on a mission
seeking to stop insurgents planting roadside bombs.
-Soldiers hear an explosion at 4:44 a.m.
-Soldiers try to contact observation posts.
Seven American service members and an
Iraqi army soldier in two Humvees do
not respond.
An unmanned surveillance
aircraft is dispatched.
-At 4:59 a.m.,
the drone spots two burning vehicles.
Two military units are ordered to the scene.
En route,
the first discovers two roadside bombs,
and the second unit finds another.
-By 5:40 a.m.,
both units begin securing
the area and searching for
the soldiers.
-By 8:04 a.m.,
the responding units confirm
the deaths of five soldiers -
four found in their Humvees
and the fifth a short distance
