In policy reversal, US envoy to meet Iran's nuclear negotiator
Wed Jul 16, 4:18 PM ET
WASHINGTON (AFP) - The United States announced Wednesday a senior US
diplomat would attend international nuclear talks with Iran, in the
highest-ranking meeting between the two foes in three decades.
In a major policy shift, the White House and State Department said
Under Secretary of State William Burns would attend the Saturday talks
with Iran on a "one-time" mission to underline US conditions for
ending the atomic stalemate.
Former State Department official Suzanne Maloney told AFP that the US
diplomatic move marks "a departure" from earlier Bush policy "because
it effectively endorses the idea of talks without preconditions."

The United States and five other European nations have offered
incentives to Iran to encourage them to stop any nuclear weapons
production, this meeting is simply to see if Iran is ready to except
those incentives. William Burns, the State Department's third-ranking
diplomat, will not do any negotiating with the Iranians but only
listen to Iran's answer to the incentives package.
Now read this next part very carefully and see if you can comprehend
it's meaning.
Burns will also restate a U.S. offer for formal negotiations with Iran
if it suspends uranium enrichment and reprocessing. He will warn that
if the deal is not accepted, the Iranian government can expect more
sanctions to be imposed on its banking and financial sectors. And, he
will remind Iran that Bush has not taken the military option off the
table.
In other words, there will be NO FORMAL NEGOTIATIONS WITH IRAN if it
does not suspend uranium enrichment. THOSE ARE PRECONDITIONS FOR
FORMAL NEGOTIATIONS. |
